The Earwax Microsuction Technique at MEDSCLINIC – Temporary Stopped until 31st October 2025
At MEDSCLINIC, we strive to safely and professionally address our patients’ earwax concerns.
A typical treatment involves our skilled clinicians using microsuction — a technique widely regarded as the safest and quickest method for earwax removal. Microsuction is a safe and effective way to clear earwax and other debris from the ear canal. Using a small, narrow suction device, the clinician carefully navigates the canal, gently removing any obstruction. Treatments are generally quick and painless, usually lasting between 15 to 30 minutes.
Occasionally, if the earwax is particularly compacted or hardened, it may be necessary for the patient to use a course of ear drops before removal can be successfully completed. In such cases, the clinician will arrange a follow-up appointment once the wax has softened.
Treatment Choice
Earwax microsuction is an excellent option for patients who have struggled with other removal methods, such as ear irrigation. It is especially recommended for individuals who have had previous ear surgeries or have perforated eardrums.
The most common side effect is temporary dizziness or vertigo due to the sudden change in pressure within the ear; however, this usually subsides within a few minutes.
Although very rare, there is a small risk of damage to the eardrum or inner ear, but these risks are minimized when the procedure is performed by a trained specialist.
Initial Assessment
Before proceeding, we require your fully informed consent.
The initial assessment includes:
-
Taking a full medical history.
-
Checking the health of your ear.
-
Identifying any “red flag” signs that may require a referral to another healthcare professional before earwax removal.
-
Taking a photograph of your ear to document its current condition.
If, during the assessment, the clinician identifies signs of infection or other issues that prevent us from performing the removal, you will be informed immediately. This may result in a referral to your local surgery, depending on our agreed arrangements with them.
You may be eligible for earwax removal if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms due to earwax impaction:
-
Hearing loss
-
Earache or a feeling of blocked ears
-
Ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)
-
Dizziness or nausea caused by a blocked ear
We will also take a photograph after the procedure to confirm successful wax removal.
Cost of the Service
-
The minimum payment for the initial ear check-up, eligibility assessment, and possible referral is £25.00.
-
If you are eligible and proceed with wax removal, the final total cost will be £60.00.
